Maria graduated with Honors in English Literature (and History) from McGill University and proceeded to complete her Master of Arts degree, specializing in Canadian Literature (poetry and creativity): the subject of her thesis was: the Poetry of Irving Layton: a Scatological Dimension.

Maria had the distinct privilege of meeting Irving Layton several times and was truly inspired by him. Irving Layton read her dissertation with gusto and claimed it was rare to produce two masterpieces in one year…..the publication of the thesis and the birth of Aviva (which means in Hebrew, breath of fresh air, new life and originality ). Aviva is the symbolic Muse of both Poets !
