McCord’s Quiet Rebellion (Chronicler Publishing)

In her first historical novel, McCord’s Quiet Rebellion, M.L. Ierfino-Adornato listens very carefully to the voice of Mary McCord, daughter of the legendary Thomas McCord. For decades she was intrigued by Mary and having conducted research at the McCord Museum, she discovered that the information about her was ‘inconclusive’.

Montreal in the eighteenth century, is the frontier New World setting in Maria Luisa’s historical novel. The rich and influential McCord family men are proud Scottish descendents who represent the longest line of judges and of battle honors in Canada. They fight to defend the interests of the British Empire and in 1759 they join General Wolfe on the Plains of Abraham.

The British Empire rewarded them with substantial land grants (among other battle honors), one such parcel was historic Griffintown, where subsequent Irish settlers migrated to escape the terrible potato famine in the mother country (except for the extremely unfortunate ones who were quarantined upon arrival and buried ‘en masse’. An ‘epitaph’ was erected in the form of a  black stone , to commemorate the tragic event). Italians later followed, especially in the early 1950’s (including Maria Luisa’s parents and relatives) and they fondly called the industrial ghetto, ‘u villaggiu’).

Affluent Mary McCord is the first born daughter of Thomas McCord and the protagonist in the novel. She is the charming heroine and aspiring writer who ambivalently seeks her true identity but conceals it at the same time. Mary affirms herself and experiences her ‘quiet rebellion’ as does Canada, against the backdrop of the French, Irish and American Revolutions.

Mary McCord is a spirited and well-educated young lady who strives for a greater purpose in life. She helps the sick and the wounded soldiers in the hospital adjacent to the convent where she studies under the tutelage of the nuns. In this reclusive space, Mary finds meaning and she develops great compassion for those in need and for the Nation. A writer at heart, Mary escapes into her imaginary world and flirts with disaster when she falls in love with a dashing French-Canadian law student. Mary musters up the courage to finally confront her father about the ‘ill-suited’ suitor that he proposes to her, but tragedy strikes and Mary shocks everyone by converting to Catholicism and becoming a sister.

McCord’s Quiet Rebellion provides a nostalgic view of a turbulent era. The detail about the McCord family is based on the hundreds of letters, diaries and other documents consulted by the author. Imagination was used to fill the gaps that existed in the research. Altogether, this historical novel provides an aria and a unique voice from Montreal’s fabled past. Dans son pemier roman historique, McCord’s Quiet Rebellion, M. L. Ierfino-Adornato écoute très attentivement la voix de Mary McCord, fille du légendaire Thomas McCord. Pendant des décennies, elle a été intriguée par Mary et ayant mené des recherches au Musée McCord, elle a découvert que les informations à son sujet était «non concluants».
L’histoire est capturé par ceux qui ont le pouvoir et par ceux qui l’enregistre. Comme «l’histoire» évolue, d’autres voix émergent et les perceptions de la «réalité»  changent. Dans notre histoire collective Canadienne, Thomas McCord, était un éminent « createur de l’histoire» et très riche marchand, mais ce n’est pas le sujet du roman McCord’s Quiet Rebellion. 

La ville de Montréal au XVIIIe siècle, est la  nouvelle frontière dans le roman historique de Maria Luisa. Les hommes riches et influents comme dans la famille McCord sont fiers descendants écossais qui représentent la plus longue ligne des juges et des honneurs de bataille au Canada. Ils se battent en effet, pour défendre les intérêts de l’Empire Britannique et en 1759 ils rejoignent le général Wolfe sur les Plaines d’Abraham.

L’ affluente Mary McCord, est la première fille née de Thomas McCord et le protagoniste du roman. Elle est la charmante héroïne et écrivaine qui cherche sa véritable identité, mais qui se recèle en même temps. Mary elle-même affirme  l’expérience inoubliable de sa «révolution tranquille» comme le Canada l’affirme, dans le contexte des l’révolutions Française, Américaine et Irlandaise.

Mary McCord est une jeune dame fougueuse et bien éduqués qui aspire à un plus grand but dans la vie. Elle aide les malades et les blessés à l’hôpital adjacent au couvent où elle étudie sous la tutelle des religieuses. Dans cet espace reclus, Mary trouve son sens et elle développe une grande compassion pour ceux qui en ont besoin en général, et pour la Nation. Une écrivaine au coeur, Mary s’échappe dans son monde imaginaire et flirte avec le désastre quand elle tombe en amour avec un étudiant (en droit) Canadien- Français.  Mary rassemble son courage pour enfin confronter son père au sujet de sa vie amoureuse, mais la tragédie frappe et Mary chocs tout le monde, en se convertissant au Catholicisme et en devenant une sœur.

McCord’s Quiet Rebellion, offre une vision nostalgique d’une époque mouvementée. Les détails sur la famille McCord sont basés sur les centaines de lettres, journaux intimes et autres documents consultés par l’auteur. La città di Montreal, nel XVIII secolo, è la nuova frontiera del romanzo storico di Maria Luisa. Gli uomini ricchi e influenti, come la famiglia McCord (di orgogliosa discendenza Scozzese), rappresentano la più lunga linea dei giudici e degli onori di battaglia in Canada. Infatti combattono per difendere gli interessi dell’impero Britannico e nel 1759 si sono uniti al Generale Wolfe nella Piana di Abramo a Quebec.

La riccha Mary McCord, era la figlia primogenita di Thomas McCord e lei e la protagonista del romanzo. Mary è l’eroina affascinante e scrittrice che cerca la sua vera identità, ma che si tiene lontano allo stesso tempo. Mary afferma l’indimenticabile esperienza della “rivoluzione silenziosa”, come afferma il Canada, nel ambiente delle rivoluzioni Francese, Americane e Irlandese.

Mary McCord è una giovana signorina esuberante e ben educata, che aspira a uno scopo più grande nella vita. Lei aiuta malati e feriti in l’ospedale adiacente al convento dove ha studiato sotto la guida delle suore. In questo spazio recluso, Mary trova il suo significato e sviluppa una grande compassione per i bisognosi in generale e per la Nazione. Una scrittrice a cuore grande, Mary fugge nel suo mondo fantastico e flirta con il disastro quando si innamora di un studente in legge e un Franco-Canadese. Mary trova finalmente il coraggio di affrontare suo padre sulla sua vita sentimentale, ma colpisce la tragedia .Mary rinuccia la sua religione e diventa Cattolica e monaca.

McCord’s Quiet Rebellion, offre una visione nostalgica di un’epoca turbolenta. Dettagli sulla famiglia McCord si basano su centinaia di lettere, diari e altri documenti consultati dall’autore.
