She is the intriguing heroine and aspiring writer, who ambivalently seeks her true identity but conceals it at the same time. A reverent non-conformist (who converts to Catholicism), Mary experiences her ‘quiet rebellion’ as does Canada, against the backdrop of the French, Irish and American revolutions.
